Strawberry Singh has issued a new challenge this week – Unspoken Rules of Second Life! An unspoken rule is basically a behavioral constraint that society or community expects but that isn’t necessarily written down or recorded anywhere. It is something that is considered proper but not an exact etiquette book kind of rule. Berry’s example was for escalators which in the U.S., we stand on the right and walk up on the left. Another example would be letting people out of an elevator before getting on yourself.

In Second Life, we also have these rules.  I agree with most of Berry’s, but I still decided to create a post.  My top 5 unspoken rules for Second Life are as follows:

1. You should not extend a friendship request until you have actually had a conversation.  I generally ask the person or suggest that we should be friends … but then again, I realize I’m not as quick to extend a friendship request and wait for the other person anyway.  I’m just not opposed to using search to find the person I need/want to chat with.
2. You shouldn’t jump right into a sexual or adult oriented conversation until you know the other party is receptive.  I guess an exception to this would be if you were both in a location that is focused on sexual or adult oriented activities, but even then… the other person might not be available or receptive to you.
3. Similar to the elevator situation, when you arrive at a landing point, you should move out of the way as quickly as you can. I try to do it even when I am not rezzed yet.  If it is super busy landing zone and fly is enabled, I fly up and out of the way.  Otherwise, I just try to move a bit risking running in to others at that point.
4. If you see a person sitting alone anywhere, you should probably not join them without asking unless you know that there is a separate sit animation. Nothing is more disconcerting that coming back to the computer to find your avatar in a cuddle with a stranger!
5. Ask before adding someone to a multiple avatar conversation. Selecting your entire calling card list and starting a conversation just to invite or share your blog or talk about some happening can be very unwelcome to most people. If you are going to practice this behavior, be sure that the people you are adding are not going to just shut it down.

There are other unspoken rules to be sure, but these are the top ones for me – that I can think of today anyway. I might could go on for a lengthy list, but there is also a fine line between an unspoken rule and an annoyance.
