Exploring – Innsmouth

One night, before Halloween, we were bouncing around to sims that were listed with Halloween events or in the Haunted section of the “Showcase” in Second Life when we happened upon “Innsmouth“.  I found this sim, created by Darmin Darkes and BaileyMarie Princess for Joyous Parkin, to be very well built indeed.

Though Halloween has past and many would not venture to such a sim in the “off season”, you should make an exception and visit.  I went back right after Halloween so that I could explore Innsmouth fully, entering the buildings, experiencing the feeling of an abandoned coastal town.  My visit to this eerie town provided great opportunity for photos as well as a view of a wonderfully creative sim.

Upon entry into the landing point, be sure to grab the note card which provides a little of the origination of the sim …  Innsmouth was created with the stories of an American author, H.P. Lovecraft, in mind.  The locations described by Lovecraft in The Shadow over Innsmouth” and “The Colour Out of Space” were the inspiration.  The town is basically an abandoned coastal town in Massachusetts set in the 1930’s.  Before venturing through the teleportation door, be sure to change your environment settings as indicated in the note card.  The suggestions (“Gelatto”,  “[EUPHORIA] fin de siecle” or “[TOR] HORROR – Dawnbreaker”) each give their own experience, so try these out while there…and any other favorite Windlight settings you might like!

As you explore, be sure to listen to the sounds…the squeaky doors, the steps across the wooden floors, the wind, the sounds of the rain… it all adds to the experience.  Wear a raincoat or take an umbrella… it is rather rainy and wet in Innsmouth… along with the fog rolling in… all heightening the effect of the coastal location.  Wander in and out of the buildings, visit the theater and opera houses… the church and homes… feel the presence of the citizens that seemingly mysteriously departed…  and enjoy yet another wondrously creative build in Second Life.

I’m Three!

Looking Back...Charging Forward

In Second Life, we celebrate the years as they pass with a Rezz Day.  My 3rd Rezz Day in SL is today, September 27th, 2010.  I’ve never actually had a party or celebrated grandly on my Rezz Day as some others do.  It always coincided with another friend’s real life birthday, and to me that was more cause for celebration.  Perhaps as we are in “world” longer, the significance of the year passing lessens…though in some ways, I do not think so.  We might feel silly when our feelings are a little hurt because only one or even none remembered to send a greeting acknowledging this anniversary.  I’ve had the day off from work and my avatar has been in SL most all day.  Funny part is that I’ve not talked to anyone, even funnier might be that this really hasn’t bothered me.  The solitude that I can find in SL often is welcome.  It allows me to explore, to find places to take photos, to go AFK without worry, and even to dress myself up for photos…

November 2007 - First Avi Appearance

Over the past three years, I’ve seen a few things change in SL… the content creators continue to amaze me.  The tools have improved, things look more realistic – less flat.  Our virtual world offers more visual depth in many ways.  The skins are so much more rich.  The hair textures have improved greatly.  The clothes with so much more shape/design and texture.  The animations are more and more motion captured which offer more realism as well.  The flora and fauna come more and more to life within this virtual space.  The water effects, the waves, the waterfalls…all provide visual pleasure.  The sports and activities – surfing, football, sim boarding, kayaking, boating, sailing, driving, flying, golfing, etc – all offer more and more options.  The creators continue to build, script, texture, create environments, design clothing, grow flowers, breed animals, etc… all in an effort to appeal to residents of Second Life.

All in all… why do we come to Second Life?  There are many reasons and each of us has our own.  Some come to build and create.  Others come to roleplay and are very passionate about that.  Still others come to explore, learn, and share.  And many of us come in to socialize, to play, to enjoy the company of others, etc.  And then there are those that log in to do it all.

Sunshine at Sunset - 1st year in SL

My three years in Second Life have provided a bit of all kinds of things.  My first year was one of trying to figure it out, meeting great people and getting involved with Relay for Life in Second Life.  I worked as a host for clubs and an event company.  Relay for Life even brought a change in my living experience as I bought a huge home built by Patch Thibaud in an auction and still use this home today.  As I moved into my 2nd year, I started working for Costa Rica Sims Estate…meeting more and more people – some great, and of course, some not so great.  Planning and working some great events and helping photograph these and write about them too.  Nearly halfway into my second year, I found myself in a relationship with someone special which turned into a partnership … one that is now nearly 18 months strong.  That person, Jac, became my partner, my best friend, my buddy, and someone that I could share my second life with more fully.  He introduced me to surfing in SL, to creating environments, and shared his love of music and fun with me.  We moved from Costa Rica Sims Estate and bought our own full sim along with a homestead to ensure we could surf –  Sol Mañanero was born!   The remainder of the 2nd year included Relay for Life, Surfing, Dancing, and building our sims…most of which continued.  Spending time with friends, getting to know new ones, parting with a few, seeing a few return… all part of the life I have here.

September 2009

In this third I have been further blessed with happy moments.  Surfed in my first competitions.   Built more.  Created more.  Learned more with Photoshop and won my first photo contest.  Jac and I celebrated our 1st anniversary of partnership in April.  Did more with Relay for Life.  Held parties, sponsored parties and took part in several events.  Made more friends… and have been truly blessed with some amazing new friends.  Experienced my first gallery showing of my photos from Second Life and actually selling some… amazing!  Continued to be active in Flickr, rejoined Plurk; spent time with friends dancing, talking, playing, being silly, running around, shopping, creating, etc…

September 2010

Second Life is still fun for me, it is a way for me to socialize with all sorts of people from all over.  To share their happiness, support when they have needs, to laugh together and to create together.  Yes, I do get bored and lonely sometimes in SL; but when I do, I just try something new…explore a new place or get up and walk away.   To my friends – a very heartfelt huge thank you for making my Second Life special – from my partner, Jac, to my oldest friends to my newest… Thank you for being there, for making me laugh, for lifting me up when I’m a bit down, for helping me realize that I am blessed in so many ways – real life and second life.  Thank you for helping me stay young at heart and also for putting the stress of my work behind me…

Happy Rezz Day to Me!!!

So…happy rezz day to me.  I look forward to my fourth year.  I hope to be a better blogger, take more photos, maybe show at other galleries and set up my own, learn how to create something, deepen my friendships, make new ones, explore, and continue to be charitable via Relay for Life and other organizations as I can. And for those that indulge me here, in my blog… thank you too!

Truly surprised, absolutely honored…

Earlier this year, one of my photos was chosen as the winner of the Surfwatch photo contest in Second Life.  It was awesome to be recognized and it was my first.  As part of my prize, my photo was to be shown in a future show with Laval Photography Gallery.  Well, time goes by and one day in July, Bobbi Laval, the owner of the Gallery, contacted me and asked me if I was ready.  I was taken aback when I realized that she was asking me to show MORE than just that one contest winning photo!  Not only surprised… my next thought.. oh my hell…whatever will I show AND more importantly, why would anyone come to see?!?

I swallowed my fear (somewhat) and asked more about this invitation… Bobbi told me to just “give her a date” as to when I would be ready!  I was in the middle of the final weeks of the Relay for Life of Second Life campaign, so I suggested early August… and selected Sunday, the 8th.  Then I realized… OMG!…I need to produce some new photos too!  So… I did just that!  Luckily, there were some awesome builds at the Relay for Life sims, so that got my butt in gear to capture some shots before they disappeared.  Unlucky for me, at the same time, my real life work was blowing up with huge volumes and technical issues which required a lot more of my time than norm…but “such is life” as we say.  I have now just about pulled everything together, finishing up a few more items, and am preparing for the opening at Bobbi’s gallery.

Just a little about me…I do not consider myself naturally creative, it is something I work to be.  I am not educated in photography in the real world, merely a casual photographer that always fails to upload images or get film developed!  I picked up Photoshop and thought… ohhhh I can make a greeting card or sign for a friend…but hadn’t thought to develop skills beyond that.  In Second Life, I have always been a “snap shotter”, saving most to hard drive, because I didn’t want to pay upload charges for such random shots, LOL.  I still do this and probably have 1000s of images sitting there begging for review.  In spending time with friends that are much more naturally artistic and following the work of others via Flickr and gallery displays…I was encouraged to experiment with my snaps in Photoshop and try to learn new ways of enhancing … to create a mood, capture a feeling, etc.  I then began to take snapshots at times with more thought – lining up my view, using windlight, finding cool places, etc.  I have worked at developing my sense of Photoshop and what it can do, but I am still very very much the novice.  I enjoy creating images of beautiful and interesting places.  I don’t explore as much as I should as I often save places to explore with a friend, and in waiting…I miss out on places and events.  I enjoy capturing memories of events, people,  activities, but my true inspiration is the “art of the build” –  actual structures, sim creations, environments, landscapes, water features,  etc.

My goal is to provide a view into my Second Life…my ‘existence’ while ensuring that places aren’t forgotten, events don’t get discarded, and memories are founded.  I hope that in some ways I can inspire others to visit places, encourage creativity, support the creators, enjoy their second life, explore, experiment and learn.  My skills will hopefully continue to improve, my eye for the ‘shot’ will be enhanced, my desire to learn will not waver and I will continue to find inspiration and amazement in the work that others produce.

Every time you visit a gallery or tell someone else about a gallery or some work that you admire…you are showing your support and encouragement of the creative world.  I am constantly in awe of so many of the creations I see in both the real and virtual world…and believe that the sights and sounds of all worlds should be treasured.

The work that I have chosen to display for this event includes captures from Lumeria, Relay for Life 2010 Designer Builds, SL Surfing, my home and a few other locations around Second Life.  The opening will be held on Sunday, August 8, 2010, at 12:30pm SLT with Clairde Dirval entertaining us at 1:00pm SLT.  The Laval Photography Gallery is located on San Gabriele sim.  Bobbi will also be showing her work upstairs in the gallery and OldSurferDude Danitz is displaying his original work out on the deck.  It should be a fun event, and if you have a moment, I do hope you can stop in.  If not, I’d be honored if you have the opportunity to stop in after the event as well.

Thank you… for your interest and support and always for your encouragement 🙂
